Brief to boom. How our design clients get the best out of us

A killer brief is just the beginning. Here’s how to get the best out of your creative team — from honest conversations to trusting the process (and knowing when not to art-direct your own logo)

If you want boring, templated, by-the-book agency behaviour — we’re probably not your people.

But if you're after big ideas, slick execution, and the kind of creative thinking that makes your competitors sweat a little... then let's talk about how to actually make that happen.

Here’s what we’ve learned over years of building bold brands and beautiful stuff with clients who get it.

Great briefs make great work (and save us all therapy bills)

Think of your brief like a treasure map. If it’s half-drawn, coffee-stained, and missing a few landmarks, we’ll still try to find the gold — but it’s going to take longer and we might accidentally blow up a tree along the way.

Be specific. Be generous with context. Tell us the “why” behind the project, not just the “what”.

If you're not sure where to start, don't panic — we've got ways to help pull the right info out of your brain. But trust us: the more solid your brief, the smoother (and sexier) the journey.

Honesty over niceties. Give us the good, the bad and the batshit.

Don’t tidy up your mess before you come to us. Bring it all.

We want to know if your last agency ghosted you. Or if your team can't agree on what your logo means. Or if your boss thinks “branding” just means sticking a swoosh on everything.

Creative gold comes from real problems. So skip the sugar-coating — we’d rather have the awkward truth than a polite fib.

Trust the process. Challenge it too — but be curious, not scared.

Our process works. We've built it to be flexible, collaborative, and full of space for sparks to fly. So when we ask weird questions or throw you curveballs, it’s not us being difficult — it’s us digging for diamonds.

That said, we like smart questions. We love being challenged by clients who want to understand the 'why' as much as the 'what'. Just don’t come for us with vibes-based panic or last-minute cold feet — it ruins the magic.

Know what success looks like. (No, not just “make it pop”.)

“Make it pop” is not a metric. Neither is “vibe check passed”.

Before we start crafting, we need to know what winning means to you. More leads? A stronger brand? That warm fuzzy feeling when you finally feel proud of your website?

Let’s pin it down early, so we’re all heading in the same direction — and celebrating the right milestones along the way.

We’re a creative partner — not a pixel pusher.

We want you involved. We love collaboration. But there’s a difference between steering the ship and grabbing the wheel mid-storm.

The best work happens when our clients bring clarity, trust and energy to the table — and then let us do our thing. We’ll keep you looped in, explain the thinking, and give you room to react. But if you start art-directing fonts via WhatsApp at 10pm… we may have to stage an intervention.

Dream Client Cheat Sheet

Want to be the kind of client creatives fight to work with? Here’s your cheat code:

  • Arrive with a killer brief (or lets us help shape one)
  • Share the messy truths, not just the glossy version
  • Challenge ideas with us, not against us
  • Know what “success” actually looks like
  • Don’t vanish mid-project (we’re not ghostbusters)
  • Trust the experts you hired
  • Pay on time (legitimately sexy behaviour)
