Google Bard becomes Gemini

ChatGPT, is it time to move over?

February 13, 2024

Last week, on Feb 8th 2024, Google announced that Gemini will now be known as Bard along with the exciting rollout of their new mobile app and Gemini Advanced with Ultra 1.0.

So what is Gemini?

Thanks to the soaring popularity and advancements of OpenAI's ChatGPT, Gemini, formerly know as Bard, is Google's answer to the rapidly evolving landscape of AI chatbots. Gemini is part of Google's broader push into AI and machine learning technologies, aiming to harness these capabilities for a wide range of applications, from search enhancements to conversational AI.

The multimodal large language model can generate content in various formats such as text and images.

Gemini Advanced – Google's most capable AI model

Rivalling the biggest and most popular AI models, Gemini Advanced has been rated the most preferred tools by third-party raters in a "blind" evaluation thanks to their dynamic Ultra 1.0 that powers it – So not only is Gemini Advanced Google's largest and most capable model, it's arguably one of the best on the market (you can give it a go with a free two month trial).

In the launch announcement, Sissie Hsaio, the VP and General Manager of Google Experiences and Google Assistant, details just how powerful the Ultra 1.0 model is:

"Gemini Advanced is far more capable at highly complex tasks like coding, logical reasoning, following nuanced instructions and collaborating on creative projects. Gemini Advanced not only allows you to have longer, more detailed conversations; it also better understands the context from your previous prompts. For example:

  • Gemini Advanced can be your personal tutor — creating step-by-step instructions, sample quizzes or back-and-forth discussions tailored to your learning style.
  • It can help you with more advanced coding scenarios, serving as a sounding board for ideas and helping you evaluate different coding approaches.
  • It can help digital creators go from idea to creation by generating fresh content, analysing recent trends and brainstorming improved ways to grow their audiences.

This first version of Gemini Advanced reflects our current advances in AI reasoning and will continue to improve. As we add new and exclusive features, Gemini Advanced users will have access to expanded multimodal capabilities, more interactive coding features, deeper data analysis capabilities and more. Gemini Advanced is available today in more than 150 countries and territories in English, and we'll expand it to more languages over time."

Gemini, the mobile app

Bringing a new experience for Gemini and Gemini Advanced on mobile, the foundations are being laid for a true AI-assistant.

"With Gemini on your phone, you can type, talk or add an image for all kinds of help while you’re on the go: You can take a picture of your flat tire and ask for instructions, generate a custom image for your dinner party invitation or ask for help writing a difficult text message."

Both versions can be accessed on Android or in the Google app for IOS.

Last but not least, AI in Google Ads

Google has also introduced a new feature in Google Ads that utilises Gemini to help marketers build better search campaigns through a chat-based experience.

Overall, the rebranding of Bard to Gemini and the launch of its mobile app and advanced version showcases Google's commitment to improving its generative AI capabilities and offering users a better experience.
